SURPLUS WIRE FOR COMMERCIAL AND INSTITUTIONAL FACILITIES
A facility maintenance department keeps wire because the alternative is waiting on a supply house during an outage. Over years, that stock becomes a shelf of cable for equipment that has been replaced.
Hospitals, laboratories, food and beverage processing plants, data halls and large commercial buildings keep maintenance stock of THHN, control cable, portable cord, low-voltage and fire alarm cable. Surplus builds up when equipment is replaced, a wing is renovated, or a spare-parts policy changes.
Facility material is often a mix of full reels bought for a project and short lengths saved from repairs. Both are reviewable. List the full reels separately from the short lengths, and photograph the labels on boxes as well as the reel tags.
Food-processing and laboratory environments sometimes restrict what can leave the building. If material needs to be quarantined, photographed on site or released through a specific process, describe that in the submission and it will be worked into the logistics.
Material that typically shows up
- Maintenance stock of THHN and XHHW
- Control cable for HVAC, chillers and process equipment
- Portable cord, welding cable and appliance cable
- Fire alarm and low-voltage cable
- Fire-rated and plenum-rated cable
- Short lengths saved from repairs
One thing worth knowing
Facilities rarely have a purchase order to match against old stock. Describe what you know — gauge, construction, approximate footage — and use the tag photos to fill in the rest.
Next step
Send the list and the photos
The fastest submission is a list with one line per reel and photos of the tags. If the material is in more than one place, say where each group is — logistics can be planned after the review.
